Here is a before and after of the makeover I did on my Grandma's old mirror.
I've always loved this mirror, ever since I was a girl and it hung in my Grandparents entry way above their Louis style phone table (which I also inherited but haven't found a place for yet).
Glen's never been a big fan of this mirror as he says it's 'too Gothic' hence it's been hiding away in the cupboard since we moved into this house.
But as a part of my never ending bedroom makeover project I decided to paint the mirror white and it will go above our bed against the dark feature wall. What do you think?
Glen's given it the thumbs up. It's still not quite his taste but I think the white has softened the 'gothicness' for him.
It's a very heavy mirror, I think it's made of plaster or something. And it felt a bit wrong to paint it white (like I was covering over history or something) but I figured it's better for it to be white and be used and appreciated than to be gold/bronze and be hiding away in a cupboard. I felt a bit like Sir Arthur Evans who discovered and tried to recreate and mess with the Minoan ruins. Hehehee, have you noticed I always get a bit too philosophical about things :)
Anyway, I'm looking forward to seeing it all come together.
Have a great day,
Philosophise away Janette...I love finding out new things! I think your mirror looks fantastic and will be wonderful on a dark wall. I did a similar thing with one I had and I'm so glad I made the change. Make sure you use good hooks on the wall...wouldn't want you being knocked unconscious while you sleep!
ReplyDeletelove the mirror it looks gorgeous and i think its going to look fabulous in your room,i look forward to seeing pictures when its hanging in your room and i know what you mean the make-overs are never ending ..totally understand :) XX
ReplyDeleteIt has turned out really well, great job. I hope to see a picture when it is in place. Well done. :-)
ReplyDeleteI am usually against covering over the age but I actually think it looks better. And it's important to use it.... xoxo
ReplyDeleteYour mirror looks fantastic Janette! It will look fabulous against a dark wall:) Can't wait to see it hanging in the bedroom:) Happy Tuesday ~ Tina xx
ReplyDeleteI love it Janette! I'm going to take your advice and paint the one I bought a few weeks ago white...I just need to find some time to do it!!
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean about the history bit but it's far better to love and use something than store it away.
Lucky you getting the thumbs up on the mirror above the bed. I have an oval black wire one that I love and want to do the same with but it has had a distinct thumbs down (humph)!
Hope you and Will are having a lovely sunny afternoon! :-)
It looks great and I agree, you are better off changing the colour and using/loving it as opposed to keeping it how it is and never enjoying it :)
ReplyDeleteJanette the mirror looks lovely white now you can find a new spot for it in your home.

I have a very similar mirror that belonged to my grandmother, which also hung over her little phone table - how funny! I've also painted mine white, and so agree that it's better to be loved and used, than hidden away just because of the colour. The power of paint is truly amazing! K xx
ReplyDeleteYour mirror looks great Janette. I like it in the white and it is much better that you get to appreciate it's beauty even if it is wearing a new dress! xx
ReplyDeleteI really love the mirror painted white, it makes all its intricate pretty parts stand out that bit more and I think it is going to look amazing against a dark wall. I can't wait to see it hanging but I agree with Kerry about hanging it securely if its really heavy and going to be hanging above your head while you sleep :)
ReplyDeleteLove it! Can't wait to see it hung!
ReplyDeleteI wish I had something like that stashed away waiting for a makeover. It looks terrific.
ReplyDeleteI love the mirror Janette, I totally agree it makes sense to paint it white and hang it where it can be tresured rather than leave it gold and locked away in a cupboard. Looking forward to seeing it hanging in your bedroom.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your week, we are having lots of rain and very cold temps here too. Great indoor project and playing weather.
