Movie Review - The Last Station

I hope you all had a lovely Easter long weekend. We had a great time gardening, socialising and yesterday Glen and I had a treat as my brother and sister-in-law offered to mind William for us so we could go to the movies.

We went and saw The Last Station which is the story based on the later stage of Leo Tolstoy's life. It stars Christopher Plummer (Cpt Von Trapp in Sound of Music) as Tolstoy, Helen Mirren as his wife the Countessa Sofya, James McAvoy (from Atonement) as a young guy who becomes Tolstoy's personal secretary so that he can spy on the family and the Countessa for Vladimir Chertkov, played by Paul Giamatti.

We found it a bit depressing and heartbreaking but it was very interesting to learn a bit more about Tolstoy's life. Helen Mirren was amazing as always, all the actors were great actually, except that their accents annoyed me for the first part of the movie. They all had different versions of English accents and they were meant to be Russian. Here are some of the beautiful scenes from the movie which I found via google images.



I really like the Russian tea glasses which you can sort of see in the image above. I googled them and here are some more examples, they are called Podstakannik.

Isn't it amazing, all the different cultures in the world!
Just think about all the different ways people drink tea around the world... England, Japan, China, Russia, Turkey...

My new fav movie - It's Complicated

I went to the movies on Monday night with my lovely sister-in-law. It was just the perfect evening, so nice to get out at night.

My local movie theatre is a beautiful old art deco cinema, which makes the movie experience all the more pleasant! Much nicer than going to a big noisy complex.

Anyway we just loved the movie, laughed so much and enjoyed the eye candy of Jane's (Merryl Streep) Spanish style ranch house. Ahhhhhh... take a look.

When it got to the part in the movie where you see Merryl Streep in her massive vegie garden, all perfect and flourishing, I turned to my sister-in-law and said 'Wow... she doesn't have possums!' we both started laughing hysterically and couldn't' stop. Here's the garden...
