DIY Roman Blinds - wish me luck!

This project has been on my mind all year but I have not yet had the guts (or the time) to undertake it. Yes Roman Blinds people, tricky, but maybe not too tricky - I hope!

Take a look as some pretty inspiration so you can get my drift...

Isn't this the happiest looking home office? The colours and the light are stunning, and so are those blinds.

A more subtle room but very elegant and neutral, those grey roman's with the white ribbon down the edge are gorgeous!

These ones let lots of nice light through and really tie all the elements of this kitchen together don't you think?

And do you know a little girl who WOULDN'T want a pink and turquoise bedroom like this one?

Very wintery, cosy, natural looking and you can't go past stripes can you?

So do you want to see the fabric I've chosen? Well this fabric chose me really. I saw it at Spotlight yesterday and it was my favourite in the whole shop by far so I bought half a meter to make kitchen tea towels out of but then when it rang up at $5/mtr as opposed to the $14.95/mtr on the tag I said to the lady 'Well at that price let me have an extra 2mtrs'. THEN she couldn't get get the computer to work properly and gave me the extra 2mtrs at $1.50!
Don't you agree, it was meant to be?

And there it is, stunning right?

So it might take me a few weeks to get started (find the time) but I will do a little 'how to' post when it's completed. I've got a great book which has 'how to make roman blinds' but I've lent it to a neighbour down the road so if I don't get it back in time I've found a great online tutorial which looks just as good as my book's instructions here.

Have any of you lovely ladies out there made roman blinds before? How did they turn out, is it hard... no, no, actually don't tell me that!

Have a lovely day,

  2. Hi Janette, good on you for tackling those roman blinds. Personally I think they are very classy in any home. I had plain white ones but the fabric you have chosen is gorgeous. If you get some spare fabric left over send it my way and I would be happy to make you some matching lamp shades to go with your blinds. Have a great day. Sandy x

  3. Seriously Janette, romans are so easy to make. I made a whole house full for our last place, and if you can sew a straight line, measure accurately and can apply some basic geometry, you'll have no trouble at all. I found the ready-made tape (complete with o-rings attached) was much easier and quicker to use. Oh, and make sure you use a straight-edge to get your fabric straight, and don't forget to centre your pattern evenly - as you can probably guess, I learned from my mistakes! LOVE the fabric you've chosen, and what a bargain. Can't wait to see how they turn out, but I'll bet they look sensational! K xx

  8. Good luck! I wish I could sew but just the thought of turning a sewing machine on scares me! I love that office! I dream of one day having a little purpose built studio in our back yard. Just like Bree in Desperate Housewives! I'll admit to having a bit of a crush on her!

Not likely with our teeny tiny back yard. One of the sacrifices of living in a inner Melbourne suburb!

  15. Hi Janette, I love your fabric and what a brilliant bargain. It will look gorgeous as a crisp and stylish roman. They're easy to make - just take your time and don't rush. Allow 400mm for the seams, header and hem. Happy sewing!

  16. Hi Janette, love your bargain material it is very pretty. I can't wait to see your new roman blind. I found some very expensive material which I love and would probably buy but to have the shop make it up was about 5 times the cost for a small kitchen window - crazy! So I will be keeping an eye on yours and I will also take a look at your link - thanks. Otherwise, I might have to call on Kerri!
