Baby B nursery moodboard

You might remember when I blogged about Will's new room moodboard I said that I would probably leave his old room as is for Baby B as I didn't feel like decorating two rooms in a short space of time?

Well.... hehehe, do you think I could be sensible and stick to that decision? NO, the decorating bug bites hard and so here is Baby B's new nursery moodboard.

I've bought the cute whale fabric from Funky Fabrix and I'm using the teal, light blue, reddy/orange and orange as my colour palette as well as navy as the base. I'm going to make a cot blanket, cushion covers and cover the existing light shade with the fabric.

I've purchased the felt to make the rainbow cloud mobile (in the colour scheme colours only). I've got the navy curtains and because the one wall is already painted light blue I'm going to hang white tissue paper pom poms as clouds above the cot.

I think we'll get an ikea Poang chair to be my feeding chair but the navy one.

And I've designed the 'Somewhere over the Rainbow print' esp for Baby B (but might make it a new series to add to the shop - what do you think?) and I'll hang two chevron patterned prints on either side of it.

What do you think? I'd love your feedback! Any other ideas?

New Hair & a bump pic

Firstly thank you all for your advice re my change of hair colour :)

The general consensus seemed to be to go for the auburn with blonde highlights.

So when I got to the hairdresser I told her what I was thinking and then she got the owner to talk to me about the colour and I thought Hmmmm.... this is exactly what Trish said in her comment yesterday:

"Ok Janette, this ones right up my alley because I am a hairdresser!!!!
if you visit the same hairdresser all of the time he/she will give you great advice because they know you as a client, but being pregnant generally changes the rules. Often when pregnant at the time when you become really sick of your new body shape you will often opt for a change of hair to feel better, it usually results in one of those "hormonal" emotional melt downs, so NO good hairdresser would advise this. I would recommend a mix of auburn & blonde foils, perhaps a dark blonde & a lighter blonde, nothing to radical, to give you that slow progression towards going a little darker."

Which is basically what the hairdresser recommended too :) hehehe thanks Trish for the heads up!

So here are the results...

(it's hard to get a good pic as the colour looks so different in different lights)

Not quite as auburn-y as I'd planned but quite a lot darker all over and the 'safety' of the blonde over the top.

It's much closer to my natural colour so 'woo-hoo less regrowth!'

29 weeks

And here is a 'Baby B' bump update pic thrown in for good measure :)

So thanks again for the hair help! I wonder what Glen will think when he gets home :)

Hi everyone, I'm going to the hairdresser tomorrow and I need a bit of help please...

I'm considering toning down the blonde and going more of an auburn shade.

Basically because I'm sick of the blonde growing out and my natural shade is more of an auburn now so I'm think that with Baby B soon to arrive it will be more low maintainance.

But I've been blonde for EVER and I'm worried I will feel a bit 'not myself'.

Amy Adams has auburn hair, light skin and blue eyes like me, her eyebrows are also quite light like mine... what do you think?

Or I could keep a bit of the blonde on top like Jen has - she has quite dark eye brows and skin though.

This poster makes me laugh and totally resonates with me lately.

You see, Will is toilet training so his itsy bitsy teeny weeny undies, daycare sheets, lots of trousers and shorts are constantly being washed.

But if I think I'm busy washing now, I don't want to think about the washing load when Baby B arrives! :) When are they going to create robot housekeepers like Rosie on The Jetsons?

Now that the study/home office is Will's new bedroom (pics to come, I promise!) I have been dreaming about a dedicated home office space.

Ooo laa laaaa! Tres Chic No? Love those floors and profile on the drawers and that wall colour is gorgeous against the white skirting isn't it.

I bit more relaxed but still using those gorgeous built in units and look at the wonderful light coming through! And I think that's the biggest pin board I've ever seen.

Really cozy, love the red and white. I think I'd like a sofa in my dream home office as I like lounging around on my laptop rather than sitting in a chair all the time.

Bump update - 26wks

Good Morning! I thought I'd do a little bump update - I'm now 26weeks!

So here is me today... the weather is crazy and I never know if it's going to be hot or cold so I've gone for layers :)

The outfit isn't a maternity one at all...

The navy and white stripe jersey dress is a super cheapy from SES and was about $8 or something crazy like that!

The navy top is from Seed and is very soft and cozy.

And navy/denim ballet flats from Walnut Melbourne.

All very comfortable which is the key at the moment ;) hehehehe.

We have nearly finished getting Will's new big boy bedroom ready, just waiting for the mattress and to put a few more things up. I'll show you when it's ready!

While we were away down the coast we did our usual visit to Berry.

And I discovered a gorgeous new shop called Lisa Madigan. It's in a cute old house on Albert Street and just oozes loveliness. Take a look...

Lots of beautiful bits and pieces and set in such a tranquil atmosphere. I particularly liked the screen printed gift tags and all the ceramic creations, especially the egg shaped lanterns.

And the good news is that if you can't make it to Berry, NSW then you can shop online!

This little blog turned TWO yesterday!

Gosh what a journey!

I remember I had just gotten back from our holiday down the South Coast - which we have just arrived back from again this year. And I decided as a bit of a New Years resolution to start a blog after loving and following so many anonymously.

Little did I know that blogging would open up so many friendships, so much support and also just the joy of documenting all the ups and downs in life for me to look back on.

Thank you so much for all the comments, support and friendship I've received through my blog over the past two years.

My New Years resolution this year is to dedicate a bit more time to my poor little blog which has been feeling a bit neglected during the second half of last year - due to the joys of the first trimester of pregnancy and being very busy. And I hope to be able to be commenting and visiting on all your blogs again like I used to.

I will announce a giveaway in the next few weeks to celebrate the 2yr milestone!!! So stay tuned!

Teacher gifts done and dusted

I finally finished Will's teacher gifts last night. Here they are ready to go. I made personalised Christmas tags with his Santa photo on them.

The Reindeer Noses I blogged about last week.

Two gingerbread Christmas tree cookies...

This one is my adaptation of the cute reindeer cake pops you might have seen on the web. My version is not as good but was easier. I stuck two marshmallows on cake pop sticks and then dipped them in chocolate. I stuck googly eyes, a red rhinestone nose and the pipe cleaner antlers.

And these are little mini puddings covered in chocolate. They look best with white chocolate on top to look like the cream on top of the pudding but I just couldn't be bothered to be honest :)

So I think that is all my Christmas shopping/gift making done! YAY!

I love making handmade gifts but these were the only handmade gifts I made this year unfort, it's just been so busy with My Sweet Prints and Christmas parties etc.

I will be shutting up shop this afternoon as I'm having a break over Christmas and New Year, back on the 9th January 2012.

It will be so nice to have a little break from work, although I know I'll miss talking to my lovely customers and stockists as well.

23wk belly update

Seriously! I'm only just over half way through and look at the size of my belly!

AHHHH!!!! I think this is going to be one BIG bubby!

Last night we looked at a photo of my belly bump with William when I was in labour at hospital and you know what...? I wasn't that much bigger than I am now!

My back is giving me grief and I'm not sleeping very well - how am I going to do another 3-4mths!

My parents and sister came over yesterday and asked if we're sure it's not twins :)

Baby B kicks lots at night which is lovely to lie there and feel. It's all very exciting, I just can't wait for Glen to have his Christmas break so he can help me with lifting Will etc.

Iscd Grad night

Hi!
Last night was the ISCD Graduation and Awards night.
I was a bit freaked out when I saw the stage, lectern, microphone and the few hundred people I would have to get up in front of to present my award but it went well and my part was over quickly.

I felt quite honoured to present along with the likes of Porters Paints, Dulux, Mokum Textiles, Di Lorenzo Tiles and many others.

It was a great night and I have to say that if you have ever considered studying Interior Styling, Colour, Graphic Design or Surface Design then ISCD is the place to go!

I took a few quick pics in the exhibition. It made me want to go study again!

Tonight I'm off to the ISCD Graduation Night and Exhibition to present an award to the Graphic Design students who are graduating tonight!

I was very honored to have been ask to judge the student's final Stationery Design brief.
And can I just say that their work was OUTSTANDING!

Getting the teacher gifts ready...

You might have seen this idea online as I did...

I thought it was so cute that I decided to make my own version for Will's daycare teachers along with some other handmade tasty goodies I'm yet to make.

I showed my BFF today who is a teacher and asked 'Do you think teachers like handmade treats or just prefer the typical box of chocolates/coffee mug/soaps and lotions?' She said that handmade it much better and she always likes the handmade gifts the best even if they're less extravagant that store bought gifts. So that made me feel better :)

Oh Christmas Tree

We're really getting into Christmas! Our tree went up a week early and it was so fun to decorate with my little helper, who as you can see is in dress up faze at the moment!

European Inspired Boy's Room for Will

Good morning!
Now that baby B is well and truly on the way we're starting to think about turning the study into Will's new big boy bedroom which we plan to do over Christmas.

So I've created a little moodboard to show you. I'm going to buy a white timber single bed and I've already bought the Esprit Star Galaxy single bed set and he's already got the big Personalised Canvas World Map. Have I shown you the newest print in my range? It's a french inspired print that reads 'Our Little Man' with a cute little moustache. So I'll do one of them for his room.

The solder skittle set and hot air balloon are both from my lovely stockist Ministyle (I'm yet to order).
And the Jnr Replica Eames DSW chair and the red replica Componibili side table I will get from Matt Blatt.

I think it creates a European, little World Traveler feel.
What do you think? Do you like it?
I think it's a good toddler - young boy style room don't you think?

I'll probably add little extras like a retro clock and I've got to do up the cabinet which will stay in his room.

I'm quite excited about it!

Next up I have to decide what/how much of Will's current room I'll change for the new bubby boy.

We have the 19wk ultrasound tomorrow!

And hopefully Baby B will be in the right position for us to find out the sex... I wonder what it will be?!?!?!

I really don't mind either way, but it is so exciting having all this anticipation for finding out.

A little brother for Will would be lovely, but it would also be nice to have one of each.

What do you think? Boy or girl?

Just today the lady at our local gelato shop said she thinks it's another boy from the way I'm carrying but who knows!

The big 40th party

I've put together a little collage to share pics from Glen & Simon's combined 40th Birthday Party.

The 80s themed party was on Saturday at our house and was SO much fun.

Everyone came in the most ridiculous outfits and we danced and sang to the jukebox till the early hours.

Our very talented friend Oli made the amazing cassette tape cake which didn't just look great but was a chocolate mud cake and was DEEEEELLIIIISSSHHH!

I did a black, silver and bright blue theme and just kept it simple. We got catering from The Finger Food Company which was great, they served and cleaned up so there wasn't too much to do.

It was a fantastic night and one we will remember for years. The boys are already talking about their combined 80th :)

New Print

A week or two ago I gave a sneak peek of a new print, I designed one that now hangs in our entrance way. But I've how put them up on my www.MySweetPrints.com.au shop.

Like my Home Sweet Home print, I was inspired by folk art/paper cut art when designing this print.

There are three lines and you can customise the wording to read whatever you like...

It could be a family print 'The Baker Family'

A new born/child's print 'Jessica 14.06.2011'

Two love birds print 'Janette loves Glen'

or your favourite short saying like 'Love Lives Here' or 'Live Laugh Love'

...basically anything that will fit within the three lines.

Here are some more colour options but I'm happy to make custom colours too.

I think I'm having a mini meltdown...

This morning I've woken to the feeling that I'm falling down a rabbit hole.

Do you know the feeling?

So I thought I'd blog about it, get it off my chest and hopefully feel back in control - lets see how it goes...

So I think the reason for my mini meltdown is:

It's Glen's combined 40th Birthday party on Sat night - preparations, planning, cleaning...
Our toilet waterline has started creeping up so I've got to get a plumber out to fix it asap (before we have 50 party-goers trying to use our one little pink toilet)
Christmas orders seem have started coming in, I'm REALLY busy with MSP
Will has started toilet training this week. He is doing SOOOOO well! He's doing 1's and 2's in the potty (well mostly makes the potty, yesterday afternoon it made the white bath mat) but I'm just so proud of him. I think I'm just not in the mind frame to be dealing with it today.
This heat is getting to me - my pregnancy thermostat makes me feel like it's 5degrees hotter

Ok so there is my little whinge, I'm starting to feel better already :)

I might add some more designs in a week or two, I'll keep you posted.

Print them on 200gsm (or thicker) matt paper stock. Print as many times as you'd like then just cut out and hole punch. I think they would look great tied with a pretty ribbon and attached to a simple brown paper present :)

I love the look of pattern backed shelving! Whether it be wallpaper or fabric behind a bookcase and I think I have just the item for this makeover....

It lives in the study and was my Grandpa's old book shelf. We use it to store so much but the study will become Will's room early next year so I'm thinking of ideas to pretty it up. What do you think about painting it white then putting a pattern behind the shelves which would match his room colour? Something very similar to the above picture.

As you can see it is literally over flowing with books and things at the moment but I picture the shelves with a few of Will's favourite books and toys displayed nicely. What do you think? Would I regret painting it?

Melbourne Cup

One of my favourite days of the year!

Well, more so for all those years I was working in the city and we'd dress up and enter the office sweep stakes, take a long lunch and then and stop for nibblies and bubbly while watching the big race.

My little sports star

Will had his first toddler sports lesson today and he did so well!

The teacher said he was outstanding and very enthusiastic.

They learn basic skills in Tennis, AFL, Soccor and lots of general ball sport stuff.

Parents have to watch from a distance but I could see him listening and being so excited in each new activity. He was the first to grab a piece of sports equiptment and the first to make it to the one end of the tennis court and back etc.

So nice to see as you never quite know how they'll go with new activities.

He's always a little champion in his Mummy's eyes :)

I do all those things, too, and I don't do them EVERY DAY. I guess what I'm asking is: What is a typical day and why don't moms have time for a call or e-mail? I work and am away from home nine hours a day (plus a few late work events) and I manage to get it all done. I'm feeling like the kid is an excuse to relax and enjoy -- not a bad thing at all -- but if so, why won't my friend tell me the truth? Is this a peeing contest ("My life is so much harder than yours")? What's the deal? I've got friends with and without kids and all us child-free folks get the same story and have the same questions.

I keep wavering between giving you a straight answer and giving my forehead some keyboard. To claim you want to understand, while in the same breath implying that the only logical conclusions are that your mom-friends are either lying or competing with you, is disingenuous indeed.
So, since it's validation you seem to want, the real answer is what you get. In list form. When you have young kids, your typical day is: constant attention, from getting them out of bed, fed, clean, dressed; to keeping them out of harm's way; to answering their coos, cries, questions; to having two arms and carrying one kid, one set of car keys, and supplies for even the quickest trips, including the latest-to-be-declared-essential piece of molded plastic gear; to keeping them from unshelving books at the library; to enforcing rest times; to staying one step ahead of them lest they get too hungry, tired or bored, any one of which produces the kind of checkout-line screaming that gets the checkout line shaking its head.

It's needing 45 minutes to do what takes others 15.
It's constant vigilance, constant touch, constant use of your voice, constant relegation of your needs to the second tier.
It's constant scrutiny and second-guessing from family and friends, well-meaning and otherwise. It's resisting constant temptation to seek short-term relief at everyone's long-term expense.
It's doing all this while concurrently teaching virtually everything -- language, manners, safety, resourcefulness, discipline, curiosity, creativity. Empathy. Everything.

The cubby isn't quite finished yet (as in, decorated and painted etc) so I don't want to reveal too much yet. But Will looked so cute reading his books in there this morning I just had to share.

We took a trip to Ikea on Monday and got two spice racks aka. book racks, two white stools and some other bits and bobs I'll show later.

My rapidly growing belly

I just read my also-pregnant buddy Anna's blog post about maternity fashion and 'dressing up your baby bump' which you can read http://lonadeanna.blogspot.com/2011/10/dress-up-your-baby-bump.html. Love all the gorgeous fashions Anna's found!

Then I got an email from the lovely Lisa of www.ledamaedesign.blogspot.com asking 'how is your little belly growing?????'

So I thought Hmmm... a blog post is in order!

So here is my not-so-little belly at 14.5wks

I've really popped out quickly this time around...

And I was glad to start telling everyone last week as I thought people would probably be guessing but too embarressed to ask in case I'd just been eating up a storm instead :)

Like Anna, I'm determined to try and look and feel great this time around. So I've already started investing in a few more maternity clothes, rather than just buying a few sizes up and looking frumpy in ill-fitting clothes.

So stay tuned, maybe Anna and I can do some maternity fashion posts, hehehehe!

Nail polish fun.... not!

How gorgeous is this image??? I love colour coordinated nails and I've been meaning to buy some new colours for spring/summer.

I tell you what is not so georgeous???
Discovering your son has gotten into your hot pink nail polish and finding it on the bedding, carpet, dresser, his hands etc....

When I came in and discovered him (and it only took about 1min from the time I saw him run into our room till I walked in) he just kept saying to me 'Paint my toes Mummy? Paint my toes?'

Seriously, what do you do, laugh or cry?

So I think I'm going to have to put my nail polish collection under lock and key from now on.

Party time..... excellent!

Hubby is turning the big 4-0 in a month and we're having a combined 40th with his best friend, Simon.

Simon and Glen have been friends since they were about 7 years old and even though they grew up together in South Africa they still live less than 2kms from each other on the other side of the world! And our son's are in the same class together at daycare - I wonder if it's another 3decade friendship forming?

So for the combined age of 40, and to celebrate the decade which was their heyday we're having an 80s themed party!

We ordered our costumes last night. I can't tell you what the boys are going as because it's going to be a surprise. All I can say is wait till you see the photos - AH!!!

But we got my costume and Di (Simon's wife) costume.

Think fluro, mesh gloves, rar-rar skirts, big hair.... it's going to be great fun!!!

Anyone have any good 80's party tips?

We're getting a juke box with 80's music programmed and it's being catered for finger food.

I'm thinking disco balls, black table cloth, silver metallic helium balloons. What do you think?

We're having a baby!!!

Yep, our little house is going to get a lot busier come April next year.

We are so excited and can't wait to meet little Baby B. Glen and Will think it's a girl. And Will refers to the baby as 'little baby sister' and talks to my belly in a high pitch voice with things like 'Hello little baby sister, you want a treat?'

Some of you may have guessed as it sort of explains why I've been MIA from the blog world for the last 3mths. My energy levels and nausea are starting to get back to normal - I'm 14wks tomorrow.

So yes, I'm joining all the other lovely bloggers who are pregnant at the moment so sorry peeps, there will probably be lots of baby and nursery posts to come :)

Better late than never: our weekend

I had planned to share pics of our weekend earlier in the week but it's been one of 'those' weeks and I can't believe it's Friday already!!!

On Saturday Will and his girlfriend had their first outing to the Opera House to see The Gruffalo. It was fantastic and they had a ball, especially enjoyed the train trip.

Then we just pottered around, I baked some yummy biscuits while the boys did lots of gardening.

We are getting a wooden cubby for Will which is being delivered this afternoon. Yay, so get ready for the cubby posts.

Can you believe it???

I can't, My Sweet Prints is 2 years old!

It's hard to believe that two years ago I hit the 'sign up' button on etsy and tentatively (and thinking that nothing much would come from it) put a handfull of prints up for sale.
Boy I'm glad I did :)

Country House Rescue

Have you been watching Country House Rescue on ABC?

I have and I've really been enjoying it.

Basically Ruth Watson goes to these old UK family country homes that are in financial trouble. Most of the homes seem to cost around 20-50 thousand pounds a year in bills and upkeep so it's pretty difficult for the families who own these gorgeous mansions to keep them.

Last night I watched the episode on Chesters. A gorgeous Georgian country house in the Scottish boarders which was inherited by John Henderson on his 30th Birthday - pretty amazing birthday present!

Ruth gives the owners ideas on how to turn their properties into financially viable self sufficient homes/businesses. From the half dozen episodes I've watched most owners seem to be on the slightly to very eccentric scale and usually Ruth's blunt approach puts them a bit off side.

I think Ruth's ideas are generally really practical but I can see from the owners point of view that they might not want to open up their houses for tours, events, over night guests etc as it is their home.

I love my new bracelet, I wanted an every day bracelet that would be easy to wear 24/7. And check out the other side of the heart - Tiffany turquoise.

The perfume is such a pretty fragrance and is the latest scent from L'occitane.

It's very floral and very summery, what sort of fragrance do you like?

Small Packages

It was my birthday yesterday and the old saying is def true. The best things come in small packages. The first being my little Will who started the morning at 5.45am.

Beach House anyone???

I was real estate stalking and came across this little ol' beach house in Palm Beach, Sydney.
Check it out...

That's my sort of sized pool, not too big but not a spa bath either. And I think an artist studio is a must for me :)

I love all the shutters and weather board, it has such a beachy vibe.

Check out the window seat, lights, love the kitchen.

Are they heated polished concrete floors? Why yes they are and if you're not warm enough then crank up the fire!

What a fun loft space!

It looks so cute and quaint from the front.

Gorgeous bathroom!

Love all the natural textures and materials they've used to decorate with.

And I love a bunk layout like this, imagine sleepovers in that room!

A new print

I've had this print on the back-burner for a while, it would simmer for a while in the back of my mind, then I'd get busy and forget about it. But I managed to finish it yesterday and put it up on my www.MySweetPrints.com.au shop last night.

It's funny how sometimes the simplest designs are the ones that keep you stumped.

I guess because the design has to speak for itself when it's simpler. You have to make sure the tracking, kerning, leading, and over all balance works - there's a little graphic design tutorial for you if want to click the links :)

Girl version - I love this colour combo :)

What do you think? I think it would really brighten up any child's room or playroom and with Will now learning his letters and numbers I think I'll have to add it to his room. He can count to 11 now! I'm so proud!

minimecca is the heart of creative finds for growing minds - from art, wall decals and décor through to imaginative toys – our hand-picked range is designed to inspire kids and bring their imaginations to life! We stock a selection of products brimming with creative goodness from Australian designers and artists such as My Sweet Prints, Nikki Catalano, Forwalls, 41 Orchard, Printspace, Snowfawn and Adorning AL as well as international brands such as Decoylab and Petit Collage. We have a lovely mix of modern/ whimsical/ indie/ vintage style wares that are both funky and functional - designs that appeal to both adults and kids alike.

When did you open your shop? and what was the motivator behind opening your shop/starting your own business?
We opened for trading just 3 weeks ago!! minimecca was born out of a desire to find interesting and original designs for my daughter, Eve, and basically my idea for the business snowballed from there. I was always scouring the internet for bits and pieces not only because it was so convenient, but it was also hard to find products for little ones in mainstream shops that were creative, of good quality and that weren’t totally emblazoned with licensed cartoon characters. Along the way I found some brilliant, unique and independent kids products and art and I wanted to share my finds with everyone...I had always dreamed of opening an online boutique and now seemed like the perfect opportunity - so, minimecca began.

What is the biggest challenge?
Since minimecca is so new, the biggest challenge right now is spreading the word, developing a customer base and getting our name out there! Making the leap and starting your own business can be a little daunting at times and it has been a fairly steep learning curve so far but I am absolutely loving it…minus the nagging paperwork side of running a small business.

What is the greatest reward?

Introducing our customers to a brand or artist that they may not have heard of before and spreading the love! It really is so much fun sourcing new products and designers and working from home allows me to spend as much time as possible with my cute little munchkin so it's the best of both worlds.

What's planned for the future of your shop?

I would love for minimecca to continue to grow and evolve, supporting and promoting Australian artists and designers as much as possible and hopefully bringing with it a loyal customer base that loves our range of products as much as I do. I have a few little ideas up my sleeve and hope that I am able to develop the business in the coming years and see some of those ideas through to fruition. Having said that, I am just enjoying one day at a time at the moment...but it's still fun to dream big!

Today I have interviewed one of my newer stockists, the lovely Lauren from Gingersnaps Kidz.

Tell us about your shop
Gingersnaps Kidz is an online boutique selling products ranging from newborn to children's fashion, gifts and accessories. The continually changing products in store range from fashion to pram liners, teething beads to nursing covers, paint sticks to baby pouch slings, wooden musical instruments to beanbag chairs to name a few. The online boutique caters for newborns to 6 year olds.

When did you open your shop? and what was the motivator behind opening your shop/starting your own business?
I opened my store in September 2010 when I had just had my first child and I was looking for different products on the market but couldn't always find them all in the one location. I decided why not open a store which stocks all different products in the one location. I don't usually stock the products which can be found in the big baby stores as I would rather have a point of difference from these stores.

What is the biggest challenge?
Advertising and working out where the money will be best spent in order to get the name out there. Also, trying to get people to come back to the store as we are always updating and stocking new and different products from all over the world.

What is the greatest reward?
Getting feedback from happy customers who are so pleased with their purchases

What's planned for the future of your shop?
The shop has just changed its name to Gingersnaps Kidz and has just been relaunched so currently I am trying to create brand awareness for the new name and the new site.

Rain, rain and more rain

It's been raining non-stop all week and I'm getting a bit tired of it to be honest.

I've been trying to see the positives and make the most of it by:

Wearing my gumboots
Driving my car close to the gutter through puddles and watching the water splash up around the sides of the car (much to Will's delight)
Pulling back the sunroof cover on my car so that Will and I can watch the rain splash on the sunroof window above us.
Singing a lot of 'Rain is falling' and 'I hear thunder'. Will sounds so cute saying 'pitter, patter'.
Thinking of all the lovely water our plants are getting.

But I'm pretty much out of positives now and I just need a little sunshine :)

Hair cut time

Thank the Lord for patient hairdressers!

My Mum, the hairdresser and I were in fits of laughter watching my little Will get his hair cut.

He wriggled, said Hi to the people in the salon, played with the combs, spray bottle, showed the hair dresser his dance moves, singing voice with renditions of 'Old MacDonald' and Neon Tree's 'Animals' song with 'Uh Oh.... I want some more...'.

He was worried about the hairdresser cutting around his ears and would squirm and say 'Ouchy'. I insisted that it wasn't hurting him and pointed out the man next to him having the hair around his ears cut. Will then enquired to the man 'You O-tay man???'

After nearly half an hour his hair was done and his little mop top is now under control.

Big boys toys

This week Will has been in heaven. There have been lots of big boys toys in our street.

Our street was resurfaced so there were steam rollers, tip up trucks and little diggers. They even gave a few little 'hoot hoots' to Will as they went past - made his day!

And earlier this week a house around the corner was demolished (another one bites the dust).

So we sat in one of our neighbours front yards for over half and hour watching the action.

I remember a few months ago a little old lady was talking to me about Will and she said that when boys are little you think they'll all end up being truck drivers or firemen... yep pretty much!

Today I have the pleasure of sharing an interview with Jo, the owner of Little Indigo children's boutique, a gorgeous online store!

Tell us about your shop
eg. What you stock, best selling items, what you specialise in.

Little Indigo is an online boutique stocking a wide range of clothing, accessories, room décor, wall art, toys and stationery for little ones. Little Indigo specialises in unique, limited edition and handmade pieces by Australian designers. The best selling items on my website would have to be the gorgeous handmade dolls by Cuckoo for Coco. They have developed a cult following and sometimes sell out within an hour of hitting the site!

When did you open your shop? and what was the motivator behind opening your shop/starting your own business?
I opened Little Indigo in November 2010. The inspiration for Little Indigo definitely came from having my two boys and developing a love of online shopping. I really wanted to develop a site that could offer customers something a little bit different or quirky, the opposite of mainstream and something that reflected my own personal tastes and style. I love to research and so I really the enjoy the process of sourcing the different products that I stock.

What is the biggest challenge?
Definitely the biggest challenge associated with working from home is juggling my roles as mum, Owner of Little Indigo and also part time worker. My boys are 5 and 3 and at home with me every day, so I have a lot of late nights!

What is the greatest reward?
The greatest reward would have to be my customers, particularly the many loyal return customers that have shopped at Little Indigo since it’s opening. And the fact that other people love the items that I have personally chosen for the store gives me a real buzz!

What's planned for the future of your shop?
My eldest son starts school next year (which means more time!) and so I hope to continue to grow the business and add many new and interesting products to the mix. My ultimate dream would be to open a Bricks and Mortar store to complement the online side of the business. You never know…it might happen one day!

I asked Jackie if I could interview her to find out about her love of books and her passion for instilling a love of reading into all children.

1. Can you give us a bit of background about MLB?
I began My Little Bookcase less than a year ago.
I’ve always enjoyed books but becoming a mother has allowed me to delight in books on a whole new level. There is nothing like snuggling close to your child and listening to one another’s heartbeat as you read a story together.

Before reaching many typical milestones, my daughter was turning pages and licking the various textures of books. She was gaining so much joy from books and I loved watching her discovery and exploration of them. (I particularly enjoy watching her process for choosing a book, and working out why she gravitates to particular books.)

As I watched her, I thought back to my teaching experience. Generally, the children who loved reading also loved learning. On the flip side, the children who were unsure of books and anxious about reading were also anxious about learning. Prior to having my daughter I had taken my love of reading for granted but I began to understand that a love for books and a love of reading is really a gateway into a world of positive opportunities. I wanted to spread that message.

My Little Bookcase allows me to combine some of the things I’m most passionate about: parenting, children’s literature, teaching, the internet and a strong belief that every child has the right to be literate and enjoy reading. It is a project that allows me to be at home with my daughter and also share my knowledge, passion, ideas and inspiration with other families.

My Little Bookcase is more than just a place to shelve your children’s books. My Little Bookcase celebrates the value of a traditional book, the joys of reading and quality time shared between parent and child.

The idea behind My Little Bookcase is to help parents and caregivers find a wealth of information, from book recommendations to reading activities, that assist in encouraging a love of reading in their homes.

It’s not always practical for parents of young children to spend copious minutes in a bookstore looking for the right book for their child, nor do we have the time to trawl the internet for ideas. I like to think that My Little Bookcase is an inspiring but practical resource for parents.

I still have a long way to go but my ultimate aim for My Little Bookcase is to create a community of parents who contribute to the content of the site based on the wonderful experiences they share with their own children.

2. Where did your passion for books and reading come from?
I’m not sure I can pinpoint an exact moment that sparked my passion for books and reading. I would say it’s been through a series of circumstances in my life. I do know that my passion has grown stronger with age.

I was lucky to grow up in a house of books. Both of my parents read to me regularly as a child and seeing Mum curled up on the couch with a book was a regular occurrence. I have fond memories of the school library. It was a place I felt comfortable and enjoyed being. I always looked forward to bringing home the Scholastic Book Club and I remember trying to re-create the illustrations from books onto my chalkboard.

My love of picture books is even stronger now as an adult. I particularly love their unspoken words, but mostly I love sharing them with my daughter.

I’m thankful that I have a passion for books. Put simply, I love reading because I find comfort in books. I love forgetting about my life and engrossing myself in other people’s dramas. I love the way books inspire thinking and reflection. I love that authors have a way of finding the right words to describe how you feel.

3. What are your top 5 tips for encouraging little ones to read?

Enjoy yourself: Get close and cuddly with your child. Read books that make you feel good. Play games with the words and pictures on the page. Be creative and read/tell a story in different ways: use props, add sound effects, act it out, dress up.
Read regularly: Make time to read daily just as you make time for bathing, eating or brushing your teeth.
Take your child’s lead: Read books that interest your child (e.g. topic, illustrations, stories, characters). Focus on the pages, words or illustrations that your grab your child’s attention. Let your child help to choose the books you read together.
Connect with the books: Talk about the books before, during and after you read them. Re-create experiences for your child that take place in the story. Use some of the language from the books in your conversations.

4. What are your top 5 fav kid’s books?
I can’t believe how many days it took me to compile this list.
This took me days to complete. There were so many possibilities. It was incredibly difficult to leave many wonderful books off the list. I decided to leave the classics (e.g. The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Dear Zoo, The Gruffalo, Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?, Where is the Green Sheep? Etc.) off the list because we all know they are tops!

Baby Gets Dressed by Katrina Germein and Sascha Hutchinson (Working Title Press)
A perfect little board book for babies. Using beautifully rhyme, it accurately captures two big events in a baby’s day: getting dressed and playing. The simple, colourful and uncluttered artwork is a winner too.

Monkey and Me by Emily Gravatt (Macmillan)
Just like Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? This book is brilliant in its simplicity. Its rhyme, repetition and rhythm make it superb for toddlers. They’ll be reading along with you in no time.

Who’s driving? By Leo Timmers (Gecko Press)
This book comes in a pop-up version. Again, it’s simple and fun and invites interaction, thinking and prediction.

A Bit Lost by Chris Haughton (Walker Books)
This is a simple story about an owl looking for his mum. It’s cute and funny and toddlers won’t be able to resist helping to solve the problem.

Twinkle by Nick Bland (Scholastic)
If you’re looking for the most delightful illustrations, this is your book. I should also mention it’s a unique bedtime story; it isn’t a story about convincing a child that it’s time to sleep. It’s a story that will leave you happy and reassured as you drift off to sleep.

And Red Galoshes by Glenda Millard and Jonathan Bentley (Little Hare Books)
This book is wonderful for exposing your child to beautiful language. It is a word lover’s delight filled to the brim with exciting language: rhyme, rhythm, alliteration, onomatopoeia, verbs and adjectives. This is a book of adventure, imagination and making the most of a rainy day. Each page features a pair of bright red galoshes and an adorable little puppy.

5. When you're not reading/busy on MLB what do you love doing?
I’m guilty for not making much time for my hobbies lately. I’m at home with my daughter every day, so at the moment any spare minute I have (while she is sleeping) is spent on MLB. Nevertheless, these are the things that make my heart sing:

Watching Offspring
Baking sweet treats
Fossicking through antique shops or bazaars (I just recently took my daughter to her first one)
Exploring Melbourne or eating out with family and friends (I get a kick out of visiting new places)
Bollywood dancing

Creative Women Interview: Belinda Nest Design Studio

Today I am interviewing Belinda of Nest Design Studio!

Belinda is a VERY talented interior designer and since becoming a Mum, she has set up an online E-decorating design service called Nest Design Studio. Check out her son Hugh's nursery tour - I LOVE his room!

How did you get into Interior Design? (with some background into why you got into it, where you studied and where you worked).

Since I was in year 8, I had intentions to study architecture….I would ride past a house that was being renovated and be completely intrigued by what was happening. After that I did work experience with an Interior Designer and I quite liked it. Once I got to year 12, I was enjoying studying photography and the more arty subjects and given maths isn’t my strong point, decided not to include Physics in my VCE (which was a requirement to studying architecture). From there I studied and obtained a Diploma of Arts – Interior Decoration and Design and have worked within the industry ever since. I spent a few years working as a Colour Consultant with a tile company but mostly I’ve worked with large building companies assisting clients selecting colours and finishes for their new houses!

I’ve had my own business, Inside Colour Style Design, for 8 years (which is my main business providing general interior design advice) but after having my son Hugh, I loved the process of doing a nursery that I decided to start Nest as a way of providing easy access design ideas for people all over the world (Nest is an e-design service based on line, so I’ve been able to work with clients everywhere from the USA to QLD). My work doesn’t really feel like work, I love doing it!

What part of Interior Design do you enjoy the most?

My favourite aspect of design is actually seeing a clients response! I find it easy to read clients (in most cases!) and once we get talking I can pretty much guess what their likes and dislikes are and it is absolutely thrilling when they say that it (a design board or colour suggestions etc) is perfect!

Where do you find your inspiration?

I spend a lot of time searching the net (my husband would say way too much time!), I like to find different and unique items that can be used in a child’s room. Blogs & pintrest are fantastic!

How do you juggled your two gorgeous boys and blogging and working from home?

Hugh turned 2 last week and Charlie is nearly 5 months old now and we are still finding our routine so I work whenever I can! I’m really looking forward to when I have childcare available (Hugh has been on the waiting list since October 09!!!), he just loves playing with other kids now and having him in childcare will help to dedicate a day a week to my work.

Sometimes it does all get far too busy and I might not blog for a week or so! I do see clients on weekends though, which is usually handy for them and it’s even better for me because then Matt is able to look after the boys!

Having Nest as an E-Design business is fantastic for me time wise…..it means that I can work when the boys are asleep day or night!

Can you share your top 'can't live without' items:

Beauty: Moisturiser. My grandma has lovely skin and she uses good old Oil of Olay, so I figure if it works for her, it will work for me! I also buy great big tubs of sorbolene and slather that on after a shower (not very exciting or high end but it works for me!)
Work: My laptop. It gets far too much of a work out.
Baby: Strider Plus Silver Pram. Having the boys close in age, it’s been a fantastic pram so far!
Fashion: Accessories, mostly necklaces. My shopping habits have completely changed since having the boys…..I really don’t shop for me anymore.

Where do you see Nest Design Studio in the next year and onwards?

I’m really hoping to have the time to dedicate Nest deserves. Primarily I would just love to have lots and lots of clients and be providing them with beautiful rooms!

Kate Engwirda

Late last year I did a blog post about a very special little girl called Kate, and I know her story touched so many of your hearts. You can read the blog post again HERE.

It is with such a heavy heart that I have very sad news to share with you...
Kate's Mum Fiona contacted me through the original blog post to let me know that Kate passed away very suddenly on the 21st of May. When I read the message I just couldn't stop balling my eyes out (for a little girl I've never met) and I was so touched that Fiona would take the time to let us know, in the midst of everything she's going through.

I contacted Lesley (the lovely MSP customer and close friends with the Engwirda's) to pass on my sympathies and she said that, if I was comfortable with it, to do a post about Kate and her Mum Fiona.

Kate passed away at a place called Bear Cottage, which is in Sydney. There is no such resource in Brisbane, and it really is an amazing place and such a needed resource for kids with life limiting illnesses and their families, every state should have one.
There is good news on the horizon though….

Hummingbird House will deliver a supportive home away from home for families impacted by a child’s life-limiting illness, in Brisbane. This is such a worthwhile charity (the Engwirdas stayed at Bear Cottage twice – they would have been able to access more frequently if they lived in Sydney). Creative Women Interview: Nicole of Bubby Makes Three SPECIAL GIVEAWAY

Where do you find your inspiration?

I have always loved handmade and am inspired by everything around me... magazines, blogs, websites, parties I go to, children I am surrounded by... I have been known to sit at the playground with paper and a pencil, jotting down ideas I get from watching children play! I love re purposing discarded and unwanted bits and pieces to create something unique and lovely... but I am equally inspired by modern prints, shapes and fabrics! Somehow it all comes together to become 'Bubby Makes Three'.

What motivated you to start your blog and now your gorgeous etsy shop?

In my previous life, I worked in Government communications and spent my days writing for other people. In my spare time I read blogs and fantasised about creating a cyber-nook of my very own but I really didn't have the time or creative energy. When I left my job to have my daughter Fern, I realised now was my chance! I started Bubby Makes Three the blog in 2009 as the diary of a 'first-time-mum'. At first it seemed I was talking only to myself but over time the blog evolved and grew along with my confidence! My long-suppressed dream of starting my own business became a reality early this year when I launched a little clothing and then accessories and artwork range for babies and young children. I saw a market for gorgeous but affordable handmade items and it was a way of feeding the ideas that were pouring out of me after my son was born and I couldn't find anything for him to wear! I couldn't have done it without the support and encouragement of my readers and am so grateful for them!

How do you juggle your business as well as your little munchkins?

Well, I do tend to drop a lot of balls from time to time! It certainly isn't easy, and something has got to give (in my case - reading magazines, watching TV and cleaning my house properly!) Thank goodness for nap times... I run a fairly tight ship on the routine front and generally manage to put both children down at the same time; giving mummy a tiny window each day in which to sew, process orders, answer emails, dream up ideas and - oh - sometimes eat lunch too! It is not unusual to find my little 9 month-old son playing amongst tangled rolls of cotton or my daughter 'colouring in' with my expensive fabric marker... it is often difficult finding the right balance, but somehow it seems to work! I believe that anybody can find the time to do anything they want to do if they set their mind to it; I'm testament of that!

What is your great advice to Mums with little ones?

Many people ask me how I manage to have both a little business, a blog AND have kids -- I think its about prioritising what is important to you and staying true what makes you happy. I love my kids and I love being a stay-at-home mum, but I also need a creative outlet for my own sanity! Don't be afraid to follow your dreams just because you are a mum. Oh, and involve your little ones where you can; my daughter loves craft and often sits painting, drawing or gluing next to me while I work. I am looking forward to passing on to her some of my (meagre!) skills and fostering her growing love for being creative.

Tell us about your shop

red plum linen offers a tailor made range of bedding and accessories for babies, children and adults. The products are all made here in Sydney from our own, unique fabric designs of which there are now over 50 to chose from. This allows customers to create a truly individual bedroom that will tie in with their overall interior design.

When did you open your shop? and what was the motivator behind opening your shop/starting your own business?

My inspiration for starting red plum came from having a family and looking for the style of bedding that i wanted for my daughter’s nursery. I had a background in fashion and manufacturing so started red plum back in 2001 with a limited range of mainly babies bedding. This has grown progressively to the point where we now have almost 60 fabric designs and products that suit any age group. As my daughter approaches her teens she still inspires me to introduce new designs and her younger brother has prompted designs more suited to little boys.

What is the biggest challenge?

Definitely the biggest challenge is striking a balance between work and home life.

What is the greatest reward?

Hearing from happy customers and getting repeat orders from people that I have sold to many years previously.

What's planned for the future of your shop?

I continue to develop new fabrics and products and am currently working on a gorgeous damask which will be available in about 4 weeks and a soon to be launched range of tableware.

ABCD Meetup

Last night I went to the ABCD Meet up. It was held at the 3weeds at Rozelle.

I went with Suzie (Urban Road) and Kate (another donkey design) as they both live about 2mins away from me.

I didn't get a big chance to mingle but I got to say Hi to Anastasia (Anastasia Drawing and Dreaming), Lisa (The Red Thread) and Steph (bondville).

And it was so great to meet Suzanna (Mon Tresor) and Vesna (My Little Jedi) in 'real life' for the first time - they are so lovely!

Tessa (Down that little lane) was there and it was nice to see her again, she actually came over on Monday with her two cutiepies. So it's been a very social bloggy week this week!

And check out the goodie bags, they have tripled in size since the first one I went to...

There were so many cool things in the goodie bag but my favourite is this gorgeous little black and white Doberman Brooch from the girls at littleoriginals.com.
